In the summer of 1996, The Medical Center
Company completed it's main chilled water distribution system. The main chilled water system consists of two separate plant.
Each plant is equipped with it's own cooling towers, chilled water pumps, condenser pumps and chillers. It started out as
a five cell cooling tower, two 2200 ton Carrier chillers, and related chilled water and condenser pumps. In 1999 & 2000, two 2200
ton York chillers with more pumps were added. Then in 2003 & 2004, two more 2200 ton York chillers were added to complete the
main chiller plant.
Main Chiller Plant Cooling Towers
Continued building expansion by member
institutions placed a need for more chiller capacity which resulted in a new satellite chiller plant being built in 2003. It is
located about 1/4 mile from the Medical Center. This plant can function as an independent plant or it can be tied together
with the main plant. This plant is equiped with two 2200 ton York chillers installed with appropiate chiller and condenser
pumps. There is also room to install two more chillers.
New Satellite Plant
The current combined capacity of both plants is 17,600 tons of cooling per hour. Members that are currently using chilled
water include some of University Hospitals buildings, some of CWRU buildings, Botanical Gardens, and Severance Hall.
