As the organizations within University Circle grow, so does the need for additional energy distribution components. In 1996 a chilled water distribution system was added to the MCCo plant to deliver cooling energy in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. Since then additional York chillers and pumps have been added to the system and in 2003 a satellite chilled water plant was built a quarter of a mile from the main MCCo facility.
The satellite chilled water plant can operate independently or in conjunction with the main MCCo facility.
Currently, the combined capacity of both plants is 17,600 tons of cooling per hour. In late 2009, MCCo plans to begin installation of a new chilled water facility adjacent to the existing satellite plant that will provide an additional 10,000 tons per hour of cooling capacity.
Members that are currently using chilled water as an energy distribution solution include University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University, The Cleveland Botanical Gardens, and Severance Hall.
